The G5 Sahel Defense College is under the command of a General Officer of the Mauritanian Army called (Director of the G5 Sahel Defense College). He is appointed by the meeting of ministers in charge of defence of the G5 Sahel countries, on the proposal of Mauritania, for a three-year term renewable once he has terminated his functions in the same form.

• The Director commands and coordinates the training policy. It ensures the smooth design, preparation and implementation of CDG5S activities.
• To do this, he has authority over all CDG5S executives and trainees.
• He is responsible for the communication policy of CDG5S.
• The Director of the G5 Defense College is assisted by a Deputy Director, with the rank of General, Colonel Major or Colonel. He comes from one of the G5 Sahel countries in turn, except Mauritania, in alphabetical order, for a non-renewable two-year term. He shall be appointed under the same conditions as the Director and on a proposal from his country of origin.
